Scoliosis Treatment with our Naperville Chiropractor

Scoliosis is a spinal disorder simply defined as a sideways curvature of the spine that measures more than ten degrees. Many patients with scoliosis often experience other spinal issues due to decades of discomfort and incorrect posture.

What is Scoliosis?

The spine consists of a number of bones (vertebrae) connected by flexible cartilage that allows us to bend, balance and stretch. When these vertebrae curve into a ‘C’ or ‘S’ shape or even rotate, scoliosis occurs and health problems can develop.

Scoliosis is further identified by form or type:

  • Idiopathic - The most common form of the disorder. Idiopathic means ‘without known cause’ this can occur in children, adolescents or adults. It may run in families.
  • Congenital - This type occurred during development and the baby is born with the disorder. Can exhibit symptoms at any time in childhood or adolescence.
  • Secondary - Some people develop scoliosis from long-term medical problems that affect their musculoskeletal systems.
  • Degenerative - This affects adults and develops in the discs and joints in the low back as we age. Osteoporosis and Osteopenia may be a contributing factor in women.

Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis:

Not everyone who suffers from scoliosis experiences persistent back pain. Your chiropractor will perform a thorough physical examination and gather information specific to your personal and family history. Your doctor will look for:

  • Uneven shoulders upon standing
  • One hip appearing higher than the other
  • Rib prominence or a lumbar (low back) prominence
  • Stiffness
  • Low Back Pain causing pressure on nerves and tissues

Persistent low back pain (LBP) due to scoliosis can eventually lead to numbness and weakness in the lower extremities. This, in turn, contributes to loss of balance. In the older patient with scoliosis, loss of balance leads to loss of overall mobility as falling becomes a very real possibility.

Chiropractic Treatment for Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustment helps to improve form, which in turn helps improve your function.

Chiropractic adjustments and therapies induce greater mobility in your joints, which in turn increases comfort, decreases pain and improve posture.

Acupuncture therapy combined with manual manipulation restores balance and relaxes the tight musculature.
